Storing Hazardous Chemicals

One of the main benefits of doing business with a professional hazardous chemical blending and storage company is that your chemicals are always in the best hands. When you consider all the variables and regulations, hazmat chemical storage is incredibly complicated. At SolvChem® Custom Packaging Division, we know the risks associated with each chemical we handle. Below, learn more about hazardous materials and how our team works with yours to ensure they are properly handled and stored.

What Qualifies As a Hazardous Chemical?

Virtually any chemical, if not properly handled, has the potential to do harm. However, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has a specific definition for hazardous chemicals. According to OSHA, a hazardous chemical can be either a physical hazard or a health hazard. Physical hazards can be combustible, explosive, flammable, unstable or reactive. Health hazards include chemicals that are “carcinogens, toxic or highly toxic agents, reproductive toxins, irritants, corrosives, sensitizers, hepatotoxins, nephrotoxins, neurotoxins, agents which act on the hematopoietic system, and agents which damage the lungs, skin, eyes, or mucous membranes.” As such, it takes a great deal of care and expertise to do proper hazardous chemical filling and warehousing.

How Are Hazardous Chemicals Stored?

Hazardous chemical warehousing can be very complex. Even a small mistake can be deadly. You must take into account a wide range of specific storage requirements depending on the chemical. For example, room temperature requirements can vary. Additionally, the contents of the storage facility must be taken into account. Not all chemicals can be stored in the same area; they might have different temperature requirements, or they might have potential to react dangerously with one another. Only highly trained professionals can be sure that room conditions and actual chemical placement is done right.
