Esters & Ethyl Ethanoate Chemical Blending & Packaging

Esters

Esters are non-hydrocarbon organic compounds derived primarily from the reaction of carboxylic acid with an alcohol. They occur naturally and are produced synthetically as well. Natural esters are found in fatty acids and glycerol, pheromones and aromas of fruits such as apples, pears and strawberries. Large esters have high boiling points while smaller ones have lower boiling points and are quite volatile. Small esters are soluble in water, but solubility decreases with carbon chain length.

One of the most commonly used small esters is ethyl ethanoate formula. What are some ethyl ethanoate uses? This ester chemical is a colorless, flammable liquid with a sweet odor that’s used in perfumes, flavorings and pharmaceuticals. Ethyl ethanoate also acts as an organic solvent and is often used as a component of nail polish removers and lacquer thinners. Its low boiling point provides evaporative properties, making it useful in plasticizers and glues. For example, polystyrene cement consists of polystyrene dissolved in ethyl ethanoate.

How does ester production work? Once the ester evaporates, the residual plastic binds surfaces together. Large esters can undergo a reaction with a strong base to produce the salt of a carboxylic acid and an alcohol. This process is called saponification and is the method by which soaps are produced. Esters also join repeating chains of polymers in the ethyl ethanoate production of polyester. Polyester is the name used when referring to fibers that make clothing. The brand name is Terylene, commonly referred to as PET (polyethylene terephthalate) when producing bottles.
